Two aces' paint for the 109
Open any book of Luftwaffe fighter profiles and you'll find a page of Bf 109s, each one painted by its pilot's squadron, its theatre and its tally. Ours flew a plain grey uniform. Now the 109 is painted like the real thing, and two of those famous machines are yours to earn.
The Gustav, as it went to war
Every Bf 109 now leaves the factory in the paint an Eastern Front Gustav wore. The upper surfaces are grey-green, and the flanks and belly are pale blue-grey with darker grey mottle dabbed down the sides and up the fin. The spinner is black-green. The theatre yellow that told friendly gunners what was coming sits on the chin under the engine, on the band round the rear fuselage and on the wingtip undersides.
That yellow chin is now the quickest way to tell a 109 from a Spitfire in a turning fight, whichever side it's flying for.
Trautloft's Green Heart: 20 air kills
Major Hannes Trautloft led JG 54 through the winter of 1941 from Siverskaya, outside Leningrad. His wing took its name from the green heart he painted on his fighters.
His machine is the loudest one on the page. The whole cowl is yellow from the white spinner back to the windscreen, the field-painted browns are blotched darker, and the green heart sits just under the windscreen. A Kommodore's chevron and bars run down the flank in thin white lines, and white victory bars cover the brown rudder. It unlocks at 20 air kills.
Galland's Special: 100 air kills
In December 1941 Adolf Galland, already one of the top-scoring aces of the war, had just been made General of Fighters. His personal Bf 109 was mottled grey all over, with a black spinner, a yellow chin and a yellow rudder covered in rows of red victory bars. The Kommodore's chevron and bars on its flank are black, edged in white. It unlocks at 100 air kills.
Where to find them
Pick the Bf 109 in the hangar and press 🎨 PAINT. The two aces' liveries sit at the end of the row, each with a stripe of its own colours. Hover a locked one to see how far you have to go. They only paint the 109, so they only appear when the 109 is your pick. If you equip one and then climb into a Mustang, the Mustang flies its factory paint and your livery is waiting for you the next time you fly the 109.
The other paint schemes still work on the 109. Midnight Reaper and Duneworn repaint the whole airframe, though the theatre yellow on the chin and band stays where it is.
